Iconic French women #1 : Coco Chanel

When it comes to luxury and beauty, Chanel is one of the first brands that comes to our mind, but do you know the story of this iconic French company, and most of all, of its legendary successful créatrice ?

Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel started by confectioning and selling hats at her rich lover's flat in Paris in 1910. Shortly after, she left him for another man, whom helped her open her first store rue Cambon. In 1913, she opened her second store, the first one to sell clothes, in Deauville. The next year, a new store bloomed in Biarritz. By the end of the war, she reimbursed the man who had helped her,  became financially independent and opened four more shops rue Cambon.

She met Ernest Beaux who offered her to create her own perfume ; Chanel n°5 was born.

Coco Chanel had a strong desire to help women get emancipated ; she revolutionized the woman wardrobe by making it more masculine ; blazers, trousers, simple dresses instead of corsets... and by cutting her hair short.

She died in 1971 and the company started facing difficulties, which only got worse until 1983 when Karl Lagerfeld was nominated artistic director. Chanel quickly became a luxury brand sold all over the world.

I might not like the man but he definitely did an incredible job !

Chanel is now in the haute-couture, prêt à porter, joaillerie and makeup industry, using iconic women to represent the brand.

Coco was truly an inspiring woman...

I hope you liked this bit of French history !

A bientôt mesdemoiselles,
